COVID-19: Arrangements for continuation of home tuition by distance learning for the duration of the pandemic emergency

 

Information for Parents / Legal Guardians

The Department of Education and Skills has issued a letter to advise you that funding for the provision of home tuition will continue to be provided for the duration of the pandemic emergency where tuition is delivered by distance learning.

Information for Tutors

The Department would like to acknowledge the effort that tutors have undertaken to provide continuity of learning for students through online platforms, email and other resources, particularly where access to digital resources is more limited.

This Department operates three different categories of Home Tuition

Category 1: Home Tuition for children with special educational needs and medical grounds

The purpose of this Home Tuition Scheme is to provide a compensatory educational service for children who, for a number of reasons such as chronic illness, are unable to attend school. The scheme also provides a compensatory educational service for children with special educational needs seeking an educational placement. Provision is also made for early educational intervention for children with autism.

  • HTMED1: Application for home tuition for pupils with a significant medical condition

Category 2: Home Tuition for reasons other than special educational needs and medical grounds

The purpose of this Home Tuition Scheme is to provide a temporary educational measure for a child who is temporarily without a school place, or without the offer of a school place and for whom a school place is being actively sought in a school recognised by the Department of Education and Skills.  Application forms for this strand of Home Tuition are only available from the local Educational Welfare Officer, contact details available on the TUSLA website.

As outlined in the circular a second strand of this scheme is for children in care, only, who are without a school place due to emergency placement or placement disruption.  Application forms for this strand are only available from the appointed social worker

Strand 1: Application forms for this scheme may be obtained from your local Educational Welfare Officer, through your local  Educational Welfare Service which is part of the  Child and Family Agency, contact details available on the TUSLA website.

Strand 2: Application forms for this scheme may be obtained from the Appointed Social Worker

Category 3: Home Tuition for Students on Maternity Related Absences

The purpose of this scheme is to provide home tuition to students who are enrolled in a recognised school at post primary level studying at junior or senior cycle and whose education may be disrupted due to pregnancy.
