Autism Initiatives:

Over 1 in 100 people in the UK and Ireland may be on the autism spectrum.

People with a diagnosis of autism (including Asperger syndrome) usually experience some differences in social communication and social interaction, and sensory sensitivities.  These differences impact on day to day lives; but everyone with a diagnosis of autism is different, with different strengths.

Key Facts:

  • The causes of autism are unknown, it’s likely that there are several factors that result in the varied spectrum of differences that we call autism
  • There may be some genetic links
  • It is more commonly diagnosed in men rather than women
  • It is a lifelong condition
  • Autistic people can continue to learn throughout their lives
  • Specialist, tailored support can help with some of the challenges that can be experienced as a person on the autism spectrum.

We offer services throughout the UK and Ireland:

Autism Initiatives works with more than 3,000 autistic people and their families every year through our wide range of services.

For many services, spaces are offered as part of the local authority provision for that individual. In some cases families can pay for provision where needed.

We started nearly fifty years ago with a school. Now we deliver a wide range of services including:

  • Supported living accommodation and Residential homes
  • Community resource centres in the UK / New Directions day Horizons services in Ireland
  • Social enterprises
  • Short break centres
  • Schools and a college
  • One stop shops
  • Community outreach / Community support

Please contact us if you would like to know which areas we operate in for a particular service.
