Our library is the national library for people who are blind or vision impaired and was first established in 1858. We promote independence through literacy and offer a wide range of books in alternative formats and hold more than 18,000 accessible titles. We have a wide range of fiction and non-fiction titles. Some of the genres in our collection include: history, family drama, philosophy, Irish interest titles, romance, science fiction, travel and classics. If we don’t have a book in our collection, we can try and source it from other libraries overseas.

NCBI Library has a large collection of Braille books for both adult and junior readers. We have an ever growing collection of books by Irish authors across many genres.

Downloadable books
Downloadable books is a rapidly expanding area in the Library and is popular because it is an easy way to access and enjoy audio books.
We have over 500 titles available which can be played on devices such as iPhone, Tablets, etc. or on MP3 players. If you don’t have access to a computer, we can download the book for you on a USB stick which can be played on a Sovereign player. This is an accessible MP3 player designed for individuals with a vision impairment and can be purchased in the NCBI shop.

NCBI Library Access Service is the Official Partner of LEGO® Braille Bricks in Ireland.
The LEGO Braille Bricks concept is a play-based methodology that teaches braille to children who are blind or vision impaired. Newly launched, the toolkit comprises of LEGO bricks that have been adjusted to correspond to the Braille alphabet. Each LEGO brick also has a printed letter or character to ensure the tool is inclusive allowing sighted teachers and students to play on equal terms with a child with vision impairment. Read more here
