A paediatrician is a doctor that specialises in medical care for children and young people.
They may work with other health and social care professionals and services to discuss the best plan for your child. For example, they may work with hospital services, mental health services, and other specialist medical departments.
What a paediatrician does
If your child has a disability, the paediatrician may:
- assess and diagnose disorders of development
- connect with teams of other health and social care professionals to provide medical expertise
- provide your family with medical information
- monitor children and suggest changes to care if needed
- provide care to children with chronic medical conditions especially those with epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Down’s Syndrome and other physical and learning disabilities
- connect with other services, such as hospital services, mental health services, specialist medical services (neurology, cardiology, endocrinology)
- support child protection work
