What are wheelchair ramps?
Wheelchair ramps come in a wide range of sizes and styles that offer different functionality. The main goal of a ramp is to allow wheelchairs, scooters, and people using crutches, walkers or canes to access buildings with a change in level. They also help with internal household thresholds, and getting in and out of accessible vehicles. There are many different types of ramps with different functions. For example:
Threshold and kerb ramps come in different types such as rubber, fibreglass or aluminium, and make rolling over these small obstacles much easier. They can be temporary or fixed/permanent.
Portable suitcase ramps are usually aluminium and can come in several styles and lengths, usually from 2-feet to 8-feet in length. They fold in half for easier portability and storage.
Telescopic channel ramps are made of sturdy aluminium and usually have not-skid finishes. They can be a little tricky to set up and align with the wheelchair wheels. However, they are lightweight and telescope in and out making them very compact and portable.
Aluminum modular ramps are ideal for both commercial and residential areas that require longer runs for going up more than a few stairs. Modular ramps are available in different widths and are semi-permanent or permanent installations. Because they are modular they can be set up in almost any configuration option with handrails for extra safety when needed.
Modular wheelchair ramp systems are ramps which are specifically designed to be set up and used in one location for a long period of time. However, they can be disassembled and reconfigured to fit another location in the event the user moves or they are no longer needed. They are a stable ramp which can be used for both manual and power wheelchairs, walkers, and three or four-wheeled scooters.
Permanent ramps are usually made from concrete and are custom made for the location. They usually have handrails at least on one side to provide support.
