Having graduated from DIT in Electronics in 1999 my first role was with Acoustic Technologies as a hearing aid producer. I made and designed hearing aids for the Irish market. After a number of years I began to get curious about the people who wore the actual hearing aids as I never met anyone who wore our product. After much thought I decided to go and study further in All Hallows, Drumcondra and qualify as an Audiologist. I worked for companies such as Advance Hearing, Bonavox and St Johns Hearing and also set up my own business in hearing aid repairs called Listen Hear.
In 2009 I was offered a full time role with Bonavox as an Audiologist after one of their Senior Audiologist retired. I always liked Bonavox as a company as they were established since 1967 and I felt it was a good fit for me. I stayed with Bonavox until January 2018 where I decided to open my own hearing aid practice in conjunction with Katherine Gorey (a 34 year veteran of Bonavox!) on the Cabra Road in Dublin. We liked the idea of setting up in Cabra as it has great community spirit and there is also the Deaf village located nearby on the Navan Road.
We opened for business in March 2018 and it is going from strength to strength. I believe the key to a successful hearing aid practice is to treat everyone as you would like your own family to be treated. The hearing aid industry has become such a competitive place, when I started there were only a handful of Audiologists in Ireland but today the big companies are in every major town/city who move their Audiologists around on a daily basis from clinic to clinic.
I believe you need to have consistency in this industry and being able to come in to your Audiologist and not have to tell your story all over again to another person who doesn’t know your history. This is why I believe at Value Hearing we provide a personal touch as hearing loss is such a personal issue.
